WireGuard, a relative newcomer to VPN protocols, is intended to replace older VPN protocols with a simple, fast, and safe protocol. Unlike legacy VPN protocols, WireGuard is built around the Noise Protocol Framework and relies on a select few modern, cryptographic primitives.
Simplicity is everything. WireGuard consists of only 4,000 lines of code – far less than the 400,000 lines found in OpenVPN. Less code means less complexity and greater verifiability by the development community. Complexity increases latency and negotiation times, while decreasing speed and draining battery life.
The simplicity of the WireGuard protocol makes it more robust than other protocols that use older, unmaintainable codebases, and can also be implemented quickly. Despite its relatively young age, WireGuard is quickly becoming the “go-to” VPN protocol.
