Internet Connection Sharing for VyprVPN on Windows 7/8/10 (Wireless)

The following method can be used to share your Windows computer’s VyprVPN connection with other devices. If you are looking to use VyprVPN with devices like your Apple TV or Roku box and do not have a VPN connection setup in your router, this is a perfectly acceptable alternative.

This setup is configured using: Wi-fi router> Computer > Wireless shared network using VyprVPN > Network enabled device. The computer using Internet connection sharing will need to have a Wi-fi network adapter for broadcasting the shared VyprVPN connection. This method uses a hosted network that operates using the wireless network adapter’s drivers.

Please note that VyprVPN offers limited support for this configuration. Setup instructions are provided as-is with no guarantee of functionality.

1. Launch the command prompt with administrator privileges: In the Start menu, search ‘cmd’, and when you see the command prompt application, right-click it and select ‘Run as Administrator’.
2. In this step, we will run commands to create a virtual hosted network from the wireless network adapter (note that the SSID and password key are examples, and we recommend changing them).
   
   Run the following commands in the admin command prompt. Type this exactly, hitting “enter” at the end each line:
   

   netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=VyprVPN key=thisismykey

   netsh wlan start hostednetwork

The command prompt window will indicate that the hosted network was successfully configured.

If you encounter errors here, try updating the drivers for your wireless network adapter by visiting the manufacturer website. You can verify that your Wi-Fi adapter can perform hosted network operations by running the command:

netsh wlan show drivers

If you see the line Hosted Network Supported: Yes, then your Wi-Fi card will work.

3. After successfully starting the hosted network, we will then need to share the VyprVPN connection to the hosted network. You can do this with the VyprVPN TAP adapter (for OpenVPN) or with a manual setup PPTP or L2TP/IPsec connection.
   
   Using the OpenVPN TAP Adapter for sharing requires the installation of the VyprVPN application. Sharing PPTP or L2TP connections requires you to configure a manual setup
   
   First, open Control Panel > Network & Internet > Network & Sharing Center, then select ‘Change adapter settings’ on the left. Identify and note the hosted network we created in step 2. (eg, “Wireless Network Connection 2” or similar, using the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Adapter). Click the name of the connection and re-name it to “VyprVPN Hosted”.
4. From the ‘Change adapter settings’ screen, select the TAP-VyprVPN Adapter, right-click the adapter and select Properties. On the Sharing tab, select “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection.” Under ‘Home networking connection’, select the Vypr Hosted network. If using the PPTP or L2TP method, do this step with the PPTP or L2TP network connection you created in place of the TAP-VyprVPN Adapter.
5. If using OpenVPN, open the VyprVPN application and establish an OpenVPN connection to the server of your choice.
   
   If using PPTP or L2TP, click the Network Icon in the System Tray, click the PPTP or L2TP connection you created under ‘Dial-up and VPN’, and then connect.
6. Now connect your wireless network device to the network named VyprVPN Hosted  (from step 2, as an example the SSID was VyprVPN).

The connecting devices will now be connected through the VyprVPN connection!
